The Former President's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas represent an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true challenge confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant advantages: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
