A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying such treatments should be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Experts suggest the way of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
