I'm Convinced My First Must-Play Title of 2026.

Following my time with more than 200 fresh titles this year, I am officially wrapping things up on 2025. My best-of compilation is out in the world, and I feel content with the ultimate rankings, even knowing numerous fantastic releases likely fell under the radar. Currently, my only nothing for me to do but sit back, unplug a little, and perhaps take a pleasant stroll in the— well, shoot, found another amazing experience. And just like that, goodbye to my intentions!

An Early Favorite Surfaces

In my more laid-back sessions, usually reserved for a few oddball curiosities, I've come across what could be my first favorite game of 2026. Sol Cesto is an unusual roguelike for Windows PC that breaks down a classic labyrinth explorer into a luck-based game of high stakes risk and reward. Consider this a hipster's insider tip: If you enjoy being aware of a game before it hits the mainstream, test out Sol Cesto so you can punch a hole in your gaming budget.

A Strategic Roguelike Twist

Sol Cesto is a thought-provoking procedural game that's unlike anything I've ever played. The premise is that you are tasked with descending into a dungeon, progressing deeper and deeper in search of the sun, which has disappeared from its world. Mechanically, this results in some standard crawl progression. Select a character possessing unique attributes and skills, clear floor after floor of monsters, pick up some permanent upgrades (in the form of teeth), and defeat a few biome bosses. Easy to grasp!

The Unique Central System

How you actually clear a dungeon room, though. Each instance you enter a new floor, you're shown a 4x4 grid of boxes. All spaces either contains a monster, a reward cache, a trap, or a health-restoring fruit. To explore a room, you simply click on one of the horizontal lines, but the exact space you select is determined by luck.

You may face a row with multiple foes, a strawberry, and a reward box in it. You initially will have a 25% chance of selecting a specific tile in a row.

Then, you'll chances are recalculated. The question becomes: Do you take the risk, or do you click on a safer line first and attempt some safer moves early? Herein lies the risk-reward dynamic at play in Sol Cesto, and it's absorbing when you acquire an understanding of it.

Manipulating Probability

The meta-layer is that your odds can be manipulated through a run by gathering teeth that modify the types of squares you're more attracted to. As an instance, you might get a perk that will lower your chances of encountering a trap, but will concurrently lower the odds of getting a treasure chest too.

  • Creating a build is about tweaking the numbers to the utmost to have a improved likelihood at selecting the optimal square.
  • During one attempt, I put all my stat upgrades toward brute force and picked as many teeth I could that would increase my odds of landing on monsters aligned with that strength.
  • During a separate session, I built my character around reward boxes and paired that with a perk that would weaken adjacent enemies every time I secured loot.

The strategic possibilities are not endless, but it provides ample to work with to allow you to tweak the odds according to your strategy.

A Persistent Risk

Of course, it's still a game of chance. You constantly face the chance that you have an 80% chance to select the desired tile but ultimately choose on an enemy that would take out your remaining life. Each click is a gamble, so there's a constant tension as you work through a stage and decide when to keep clicking or when to move on to the subsequent stage instead of risking it all.

Consumables including explosive devices aid in reducing the chance, just like some character abilities. A particular character's unique ability, charged after selecting four tiles, lets gamers to choose a vertical column in place of a row during that action. By employing this move wisely, you can save that move for an optimal time to circumvent a perilous selection. It's a surprising amount of nuance in the seemingly straightforward task of clicking.

Future Development

Sol Cesto is currently in early access, and it has another update to go until the complete edition is released. Another playable adventurer and a fresh guardian are planned for release by the end of January. The full launch may not be far behind, but the creators haven't announced a concrete launch day yet.

A Final Endorsement

Whenever its 1.0 launch occurs, you should consider put Sol Cesto on your wishlist. I have been completely engrossed with it, finding all of little secrets and saving my accumulated currency per attempt to unlock a steady stream of persistent upgrades, including additional heroes and items purchasable mid-attempt. To this day, I have not reached the bottom, and I get the feeling I'll still be attempting that goal when the full version launches. Sign me up for the long haul.
