Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is leaving the board at OpenAI, just a week after a collection of emails between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.
The economist commented in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have participated, excited about the potential of the enterprise, and anticipate following their advancement".
The prominent academic, who once presided over the prestigious university, announced on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his association with Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The newly public communications demonstrated that the economist communicated with Epstein until the day before his 2019 detention for accused sex trafficking of young people.
In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it accepted the economist's decision to resign.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the insight he brought to the directors," OpenAI stated.
Congressional Action
This development arrives after both chambers of the US legislature voted on recently to endorse a legislation that would mandate the federal prosecutors to disclose its records on the case.
The bill will subsequently move to the desk of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. The President has said he plans to endorse the bill, after reversing his stance on the subject following pushback from his followers.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of Epstein-connected messages disclosed by the Congressional committee days ago mentioned numerous high-profile figures in the financier's previous network, without suggesting any criminal activity by those figures.
The emails indicated that Summers and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often attempting to connect the academic to notable global figures.
Personal Accountability
After the messages were made available with the general audience, the former official stated he took "complete accountability for my ill-advised judgment to maintain corresponding with Mr Epstein".
He added that he desired "to reestablish faith and mend bonds with the persons closest to me".
Career Background
Summers held senior posts under Democratic administrations; serving as economic leader under President Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under the former leader.
He presided over Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a professor there. When stating his withdrawal from public commitments previously on this week, he stated he would maintain his academic responsibilities.
Additional Consequences
Following his declaration on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a liberal research organization in the capital where he was a prominent member, confirmed that Summers was no longer connected with the group.
The former official joined the leadership of the AI company, which creates ChatGPT, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to oust its chief executive the company leader.
