Experts Detect Russian Fear Campaign Against Tomahawk Deployment
Russian authorities is conducting a psychological influence campaign of threats to discourage the United States from providing long-range missiles to Ukraine, based on analysis from defense experts. An influential official remarked: “We understand these missiles completely, their flight patterns, defensive countermeasures, we tested against them in the Syrian conflict, so this is not innovative. Only those who supply them and the deploying forces will have problems … We will find ways to damage those who cause us trouble.”
Kyiv's Defensive Operations Situation
Ukrainian forces were imposing substantial damage in a counteroffensive in eastern Ukraine, the primary conflict zone, Ukraine's leader said on midweek. The Ukrainian president's account, based on a communication with his chief of defense, differed from Vladimir Putin's remarks to high-ranking military personnel a previous day in which he asserted Moscow's forces possessed the strategic initiative in throughout the battle lines.
According to analysis covering October's first week, defense researchers said Russia was incurring heavy casualty rates, mainly because of Ukrainian drone attacks, in return for small operational progress. Defending units, Ukraine's leader reported, were “defending ourselves along various sectors”, highlighting especially Kupiansk, a largely destroyed town in north-eastern Ukraine under intense attacks for an extended period.
Regional Conditions
Local authorities in southern Ukraine of the Kherson oblast said offensive operations on midweek caused three deaths in and around the urban center of the same name. The governor of Sumy region, on the border area with Russia, said three individuals were killed in Russian drone attacks in multiple locations. Ukrainian aerial defense said it successfully countered 154 out of 183 Russian strike and decoy drones through the evening.
A Russian attack seriously damaged critical infrastructure, officials reported on midweek. Two workers were injured in the attack, according to power utility representatives. Sources gave no further information, including the plant's location, but national sources said attacks targeted power facilities in the Chernihiv region, southern Kherson and the Dnipropetrovsk area.
Civilian Effects
In the northern Ukrainian city of the Shostka area, significantly damaged by the offensive operations against the power supply, officials have established temporary shelters where civilians are able to warm up, receive warm beverages, power electronic devices and obtain emotional assistance, based on information from administrative leader.
Global Reactions
Kyiv's representative to the military alliance on Wednesday encouraged European partners to increase acquisitions of American military equipment for Kyiv. “The situation isn't that we favor United States armaments over French or German or alternative military systems – the reality is that we are requesting the America for equipment that European countries don't possess,” said Ukraine's NATO envoy.
German federal police will immediately gain permission to shoot down drones, government official said on Wednesday, in response to numerous UAV observations suspected as foreign operations to gather intelligence and deter. Presenting proposed legislation, the official said law enforcement would receive permission “to employ sophisticated countermeasures against unmanned aircraft dangers, such as electromagnetic pulses, jamming, satellite signal blocking, but also with direct interception”.
European Security Concerns
EU chief declared on Wednesday that the European Union should strengthen its protective capabilities to deter complex threat operations following airspace breaches, digital assaults and marine communications interference. “This doesn't represent coincidental events. This represents a systematic and intensifying operation,” the representative said in a address before the European lawmakers. “Several occurrences are isolated incidents, but several, many, frequent – this is a intentional and focused ambiguous warfare operation against the European Union, and the EU needs to react.”
Displacement Situation
The Swiss government has continued its protection status offered to Ukrainian refugees to at least 4 March 2027. Protection status S, which allows people to leave the country as well as seek employment there, is typically restricted to a single year but can be continued. “This determination demonstrates the ongoing dangerous conditions and ongoing military actions across extensive regions of the country,” said a Swiss government statement. “Regardless of international peace efforts, a permanent peace that would permit protected homecoming is not expected in the foreseeable future.”
